Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved no match against a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
