During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
