Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
