Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
